Endogenous retroviruses

Retroviruses' genomes that become integrated in the germline are referred to as endogenous retroviruses to distinguish them from horizontally transmitted, not passed on to host progeny, "exogenous" retroviruses. ERVs are in most cases no longer replicating retroviruses and were integrated in their host genome millions of years ago.
