Belongs to the DEDDh/DEEDh exonuclease family.

Coronavirus proofreading exoribonuclease (ExoN)

The 3'-to-5' exoribonuclease (ExoN) mediates high-fidelity replication of the large RNA genome of coronaviruses by excising mismatched nucleotides, including antiviral agents that are misincorporated by low-fidelity RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). The enzyme has also been implicated in viral RNA recombination and resistance to innate immunity.
