Metallo protease

Metallo-proteases are a type of enzyme that catalyze the hydrolysis of peptide bonds and use a metal ion to carry out the reaction. These proteases are the most diverse of the four major proteases found in cells; they are found only in some dsDNA viruses. (Wikipedia)

    Mechanism The active site consists of an acidic amino acid (Asp, Glu) and two HEXXH motifs that bind a zinc ion. The acidic residue acts as a nucleophile and attacks the carbonyl carbon atom of the peptide bond, while the zinc ions assist the process by stabilizing the reaction intermediates.
