The viruses of this phylum have linear, negative-stranded RNA genomes and a characteristic RNA dependent RNA polymerase of the monopartite genome type (Haploviricotina) or segmented genomes (Polyploviricotina). The capsids are helical and package the negative-stranded RNA genome.
